Succession Planning for SMEs 2025

Description

With over half of New Zealand’s business owners aged 56+ eyeing exit in the next 5 years, this updated case study-based course equips accountants to lead proactive succession conversations—before it’s too late.

According to research, the average business owner in New Zealand is around 56 years of age, and a significant proportion of them (north of 50%) are thinking about exit over the next 5 years, especially as we continue to operate in tougher economic times. However, they are often so focused on the day-to-day that they don’t start thinking about how to improve the value of their business until too late nor how to start conversations with the next generation (whether family or not).

As advisors, Accountants need to be front-footing this topic. This popular updated case study-based course will focus on how to start the ball rolling and some of the common issues (family, tax and commercial) that need to be addressed both in advance and throughout any succession transaction.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Given that every SME succession scenario has its own peculiarities, this case study-based course will focus on key themes and issues that need to be considered, providing a framework for advisors to be able to identify in future assignments the key issues they need to address, with some practical solutions to consider.

SUITED TO

This course will be suited to anyone in public practice who acts for SME, plus corporate employees in accounting/tax roles in this space.
