Charities Law Update 2020

An update on recent and upcoming developments in charities law, including:

  • an update on the review of the Charities Act 2005, including an update on timing and progress, the 3 issues that are currently being fast-tracked, and an overview of comparable reviews in other jurisdictions;
  • an update on recent charities law decisions, including the Family First appeal/Charity Law Association intervention, Better Public Media appeal, Greenpeace appeal, Football Otago Youth Development Academy Trust, and others
  • update on incorporated societies’ reform;
  • tax update, including
    • debt forgiveness and donations tax credits/deductions: the Roberts’ litigation and subsequent amendments;
    • RWT exempt status;
    • claiming donations tax credits online;
    • QB 19/01 – what is required to establish a fund for donations tax credits;
    • update of OS 06/02- operational statement for charities and donee organisations and in particular how it relates to FBT;
    • IRD consultation, including: what is required to establish a public fund for donations tax credits; GST treatment of unconditional gifts; charity investments in limited partnerships; and gifting loyalty points and claiming donations tax credits; and
  • financial reporting update, including
    • the XRB targeted review on the Accounting Standards framework;
    • changes to the tier 3 and 4 financial reporting standards.

The webinar is intended to be suitable for those involved with charities, at whatever level, advanced or otherwise. It is intended to give both a theoretical overview as well as sufficient detail to be practical. Practitioners from both small and large firms should attend.
