GST 2019 – Common Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

Description

Getting the GST treatment wrong on high value transactions or making systematic errors on an ongoing basis can have significant financial consequences. In our practice we often see situations where unexpected GST outcomes arise as a result of:

  • structures used to carry out subdivisions;
  • structures used for property rented as short-stay holiday accommodation (e.g. Airbnb); and
  • trusts making property available to beneficiaries or transferring assets to beneficiaries (including as a result of a resettlement).

This highly practical webinar makes extensive use of case studies to highlight a number of areas where mistakes are commonly made when dealing with GST, with a particular emphasis on issues which commonly arise with property transactions and transactions between associated persons.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

You will:

  • Learn to identify “red flags” in various scenarios or particular transactions where GST mistakes commonly arise.
  • Know the GST issues arising from property transactions which commonly give rise to mistakes, including zero-rating, second-hand goods credit claims, GST adjustments and registration obligations.
  • Understand the application of the specific rules to transactions between associated persons.
  • Learn how to optimise the GST position when structuring subdivisions and how to avoid pitfalls.
  • Understand the GST issues that can arise from Airbnb property ownership structures and how careful structuring can minimise any GST costs.
  • Know the GST issues which can arise where property owned by a trust is made available to beneficiaries or transferred to beneficiaries (including as a result of a resettlement)
